A detailed Dutch Golden Age genre painting depicting a travelling rat catcher and his young assistant with their equipment.
Cornelis Visscher, a Dutch engraver and painter active during the seventeenth century, produced this work depicting a travelling rat catcher and his young assistant. The composition focuses on the weathered features of the older man, who wears a fur-trimmed hat and carries the tools of his trade. Beside him, a boy looks upward, holding a long pole topped with a cage containing the captured rodents. A small dog sits near their feet, completing the scene of itinerant life. Visscher was known for his technical skill in printmaking, and this painting reflects the same attention to texture and character study found in his graphic work. The lighting is focused on the figures, pulling them out from a darkened, indistinct background. The palette consists of earthy browns, ochres, and muted reds, typical of the period's interest in realistic portrayals of common folk. The artist captures the rugged appearance of the rat catcher, whose expression suggests a life spent on the road. The inclusion of the boy and the dog adds a narrative quality, suggesting a small, mobile family unit or a master-apprentice relationship. This piece belongs to the tradition of Dutch genre painting, which often explored the lives of those on the margins of society. Visscher avoids idealisation, choosing instead to document the specific details of the rat catcher's attire and equipment. The work provides a glimpse into the social history of the Netherlands, where such figures were a common sight in towns and villages. The painting remains a clear example of the period's interest in human character and the mundane realities of daily existence, rendered with a direct and observational approach.
