A 1540 engraving by Hans Sebald Beham depicting a scene from the parable of the Prodigal Son, rendered with fine detail and period-specific costume.
This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, dated 1540, depicts a scene from the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. The Latin inscription at the top, DISSIPAVIT SVBSTANCIAM SVAM VIVENDO LVXVRIOSE (He wasted his substance with riotous living), identifies the narrative moment. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was known for his small-scale, highly detailed prints that appealed to collectors of the period.
The composition shows three couples gathered around a circular table in an outdoor setting. The figures wear contemporary sixteenth-century German dress, reflecting the artist's tendency to update biblical narratives to suit the visual culture of his own time. The table is set with simple vessels and food, suggesting a scene of indulgence. The background features a wooden fence and trees, providing a sense of enclosure for the figures. Beham uses fine, precise lines to define the textures of the clothing, the facial features of the individuals, and the surrounding environment.
As a printmaker, Beham was skilled at managing the limited space of the copper plate to convey complex narrative information. The work is characteristic of his output, which often focused on moralising themes, mythology, and scenes of everyday life. The clarity of the engraving allows for the observation of small details, such as the expressions of the figures and the folds in their garments. This print is part of a series that explores the life of the Prodigal Son, a subject that allowed artists to explore themes of excess, repentance, and redemption. The work remains a clear example of the technical proficiency and stylistic preferences of German printmaking during the mid-sixteenth century.
