A classic Dutch Golden Age genre painting by Gabriel Metsu, depicting a market scene with a poultry seller, a customer, and an observer.
Gabriel Metsu, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, painted The Poultry Woman around 1662. This work belongs to the genre tradition, which focuses on scenes of daily life. The composition depicts a market transaction between an elderly woman and a younger poultry seller. To the right, a man sits upon a barrel, observing the exchange while smoking a pipe. A small dog stands in the foreground, looking toward the birds held by the woman.
Metsu demonstrates his technical skill through the varied textures present in the scene. The feathers of the dead birds, the rough wood of the barrel, and the fabric of the figures' clothing are rendered with precision. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the period, with a soft glow illuminating the central figures against a darker, shadowed background. This creates a sense of depth and focus on the interaction. The inclusion of the dog and the smoking man adds a narrative quality, suggesting a moment captured in time rather than a static arrangement.
The painting is housed in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. It reflects the interest of Dutch painters in the mundane activities of the merchant class and the urban poor. Metsu was known for his ability to balance social observation with refined painterly technique. The work avoids overt moralising, instead presenting a clear, observational record of a commercial encounter. The muted colour palette, dominated by browns, greys, and soft ochres, contributes to the grounded, realistic atmosphere of the scene. The careful placement of objects, such as the birdcage and the jug, provides a sense of environmental context without cluttering the primary narrative of the exchange.
