Shiokawa Bunrin, a prominent figure of the Kyoto art scene during the late Edo and early Meiji periods, produced this six-panel folding screen using traditional ink wash techniques. The composition depicts the legendary Chinese poet Li Bo travelling by boat through a mountainous region, a subject frequently explored in East Asian art to evoke themes of solitude and the pursuit of natural beauty.

Bunrin employs a sophisticated use of negative space, allowing the gold-leaf background to represent mist and atmospheric depth. The craggy peaks are rendered with varied ink tones, ranging from deep, saturated blacks to subtle, diluted greys.
