A sun-drenched garden scene by Henri Martin, featuring a stone pergola rendered in his signature divisionist brushwork.
Henri Martin, a French painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, developed a distinct technique characterised by small, horizontal brushstrokes. This method, often described as divisionism, allows light to vibrate across the surface of the canvas. In this work, Martin depicts a sun-drenched pergola, a recurring subject in his later years at his home in Labastide-du-Vert. The composition is structured by the rhythmic placement of stone columns, which recede into the background, creating a sense of depth and enclosure.
The interplay of light and shadow is the primary focus here. Sunlight filters through the overhead foliage, casting dappled patterns upon the stone table and the surrounding garden floor. Martin employs a palette of greens, ochres, and soft floral tones to capture the atmosphere of a warm afternoon. The stone table, positioned centrally, acts as a point of rest amidst the dense, textured vegetation. Unlike the rigid precision of earlier academic painting, Martin prioritises the sensory experience of the scene. The application of paint is thick and tactile, giving the foliage a sense of movement and density. This approach reflects his interest in the effects of natural light on architectural forms and organic growth. By focusing on the quietude of his private garden, Martin invites the viewer to observe the subtle shifts in colour and tone that define the passage of time in a sheltered space. The work remains a characteristic example of his mature style, where the boundaries between the built environment and the natural world become blurred through the application of light-filled, broken colour.
