A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Hans Sebald Beham depicting two pairs of peasants dancing, representing the months of November and December.
This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham belongs to a series depicting the months of the year, often associated with the broader theme of peasant festivities. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, produced small-scale prints that were highly collected for their technical precision and narrative clarity. This specific plate combines the months of November (Martinus Wintermon) and December (Nicolaus Cristmon), represented by two distinct pairs of figures engaged in dance.
The composition is divided into two clear sections. On the left, a couple moves with a rhythmic, measured step. The man, wearing a simple cap and tunic, leads his partner, who holds the hem of her skirt. On the right, the scene shifts to a more boisterous display. A man, adorned with a wreath of leaves, dances with a woman carrying a basket. His posture is exaggerated, and he appears to be spitting or drinking, a common trope in sixteenth-century depictions of peasant life intended to contrast with the decorum of the urban elite.
Beham employs fine, controlled hatching to define the volume of the figures and the texture of their clothing. The background remains minimal, focusing the viewer's attention on the physical gestures and expressions of the subjects. The inclusion of the artist's monogram, ISB, confirms his authorship of this plate. These works were intended for a sophisticated audience who appreciated the satirical observation of rural customs. The print provides a window into the social hierarchies and cultural attitudes of the German Renaissance, where the lives of the peasantry were frequently documented through a lens of moral instruction or lighthearted entertainment. The clarity of the line work and the balanced arrangement of the figures demonstrate the technical mastery characteristic of Beham's output during this period.
