A powerful portrait by Georges Rouault, featuring a monarch rendered with thick, dark outlines and a textured, mosaic-like application of paint.
The Old King is a representative work by Georges Rouault, a French painter whose training in stained glass restoration heavily influenced his mature style. The composition features a profile view of a monarch, rendered with heavy, dark outlines that mimic the lead cames of medieval windows. Rouault applied thick layers of paint, creating a textured surface that catches the light and adds physical depth to the figure. The palette consists of deep blues, burnt oranges, and ochres. These colours are applied in a manner that suggests a mosaic, with each section of the figure contained within bold, black boundaries. The king holds a small flower, a detail that contrasts with his regal attire and stern expression. This juxtaposition of the fragile bloom against the heavy, encrusted paintwork is a recurring theme in Rouault's work, often reflecting his interest in the human condition and religious iconography. Rouault began this painting in 1916 but did not consider it finished until 1937. This long period of revision is typical of his practice, as he frequently reworked his canvases over many years. The result is a work that feels both archaic and modern, drawing on the aesthetics of religious art while maintaining a distinctly twentieth-century emotional weight. The figure of the king is not a specific historical monarch, but rather a universal archetype of authority and melancholy. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Rouault focuses the viewer on the psychological presence of the subject. The work is currently held in the collection of the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.
