It depicts the reunion of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, the parents of the Virgin Mary, at the gates of Jerusalem. Giotto organises the composition around the central embrace of the couple, whose halos overlap to create a singular, unified form. This physical connection communicates their emotional state with a directness that departed from the rigid conventions of Byzantine art.

To the right, a group of women observes the scene, their varied expressions and postures adding a sense of human presence to the narrative. A figure in a dark cloak stands apart, providing a visual counterpoint to the lighter garments worn by the other women. The architectural setting, defined by the gate and its towers, provides a structured frame for the figures. Giotto uses the archway to create a sense of space, guiding the viewer's eye toward the central interaction.

The colour palette is dominated by the deep blue of the sky, a signature element of the chapel's decorative scheme, which contrasts with the muted earth tones of the architecture and the varied hues of the figures' robes.
