A detailed Early Renaissance painting by Vittore Carpaccio, depicting the dead Christ seated between Saint Jerome and Saint Job in a rocky landscape.
Vittore Carpaccio, a Venetian painter of the Early Renaissance, created this work during a period when the city was a hub for artistic exchange. The composition features the dead Christ seated upon a throne, flanked by Saint Jerome on the left and Saint Job on the right. The scene is set in a rocky, desolate environment that contrasts with the distant, detailed landscape of a town and rolling hills.
Carpaccio employs a high degree of precision in his rendering of the figures and the surrounding objects. The inclusion of a skull and scattered bones near Saint Job serves as a memento mori, a common motif in religious art of the era. The throne itself is decorated with pseudo-Hebrew inscriptions, a detail that reflects the interest in Eastern and ancient cultures prevalent in Venice at the time. The anatomy of the central figure of Christ is rendered with careful attention to the physical toll of the Passion, while the two saints are depicted with distinct, weathered features that suggest age and asceticism.
The lighting is even, allowing for a clear view of the various textures, from the rough stone of the cave to the soft fabric of the loincloth. The background landscape, with its small figures and animals, demonstrates the artist's ability to integrate narrative elements into a larger, coherent space. This work is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and remains a primary example of the Venetian school's approach to religious iconography and spatial construction. The painting invites the viewer to contemplate the theological themes of death and resurrection through its deliberate, quiet arrangement of figures.
