A study of the natural arch at Étretat, capturing the interplay of light and shadow on the limestone cliff face.
Claude Monet painted this work during his stay in Étretat, a coastal commune in Normandy. The Manneport is a natural arch formation that drew the artist repeatedly to the shoreline. In this composition, Monet adopts a low vantage point, which forces the massive limestone structure to dominate the frame. The sheer scale of the rock face is emphasised by the contrast with the churning sea at its base.
Monet applied paint in short, broken strokes to capture the fleeting effects of light on the cliff surface. The palette consists of cool violets, blues, and soft pinks, reflecting the atmospheric conditions of the Normandy coast. By focusing on the interplay between the solid rock and the fluid motion of the waves, the artist prioritises the sensory experience of the scene over precise topographical detail. The sky, rendered in lighter, muted tones, provides a sense of depth behind the imposing arch.
This painting is part of a series where Monet explored the same subject under varying weather conditions and times of day. His interest lay in the way light altered the perception of form. The brushwork remains visible throughout the canvas, a hallmark of his technique during this period. The composition avoids traditional framing devices, instead allowing the arch to crop the view, which draws the viewer into the immediate proximity of the cliff. This approach reflects his focus on the transient nature of visual perception, a core concern throughout his career.
