A masterful ink wash painting by the 17th-century artist Shitao, featuring the lotus rendered with expressive brushwork and integrated calligraphy.
Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, occupies a distinct position in the history of Chinese painting. As a member of the Ming dynasty imperial family who became a Buddhist monk following the Manchu conquest, his work often reflects a sense of personal isolation and creative independence. This piece, depicting the lotus, demonstrates his mastery of the ink wash technique, where the fluidity of the brushwork defines the structure of the leaves and blossoms.
The composition balances the organic forms of the lotus with the rigid, vertical structure of the calligraphy. Shitao employs a variety of ink tones, ranging from deep, saturated blacks to diluted grey washes, to suggest volume and atmospheric depth. The leaves are rendered with broad, sweeping strokes that convey their weight and texture, while the flowers are delineated with finer, more controlled lines. The integration of text and image is a hallmark of his practice, where the poetry serves as an extension of the visual subject matter rather than a separate element.
His approach to the medium is characterised by a rejection of the rigid academic standards of his time. Instead, he favoured a spontaneous, expressive style that prioritised the artist's internal state over strict representational accuracy. The lotus, a symbol of purity in Buddhist iconography, is here treated with a sense of immediacy and raw energy. The application of ink shows a deliberate variation in pressure and speed, creating a dynamic surface that draws the viewer into the details of the plant's anatomy. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink, preserving the texture of the paper and the nuances of the brushwork that define Shitao's unique aesthetic contribution to the Qing period.
