The scene is organised within an oval frame, a format that encourages a balanced distribution of figures across the foreground and middle ground. On an elevated stone platform, the central figures oversee the distribution of goods to the crowd below. The architecture, featuring classical columns and a monumental archway, provides a sense of order and historical distance. In the foreground, a group of figures engages in a dance, their movements fluid and expressive, contrasting with the more static, authoritative presence of the figures on the platform. The palette consists of clear, distinct colours, with drapery rendered in shades of blue, yellow, and red, which helps to define the spatial relationships between the various groups. Stella’s approach to this subject reflects the intellectual climate of the French court, where classical history was frequently employed to legitimise contemporary authority. The painting avoids excessive ornamentation, favouring a controlled, legible narrative.
