This panel, part of the Herrenberg Altar, displays the distinct visual language of Jerg Ratgeb. The composition departs from the serene, balanced arrangements typical of Italian Renaissance depictions of the same subject. Instead, Ratgeb employs a crowded, dynamic scene where the figures occupy a compressed space. The central figure of Christ sits at the table, yet the surrounding disciples are engaged in varied, often agitated, physical interactions.

In the background, visible through an architectural opening, the scene shifts to the Agony in the Garden. This simultaneous narrative technique allows the viewer to observe the progression of events within a single frame. The figures are rendered with expressive, sometimes exaggerated, gestures and facial features, a common trait in German art of the early sixteenth century. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the muted reds and ochres of the garments.

Ratgeb incorporates architectural elements, such as the vaulted ceiling and the cupboard on the left, to provide a sense of enclosure. The frame itself is inscribed with Latin text, which integrates the physical object into the devotional context of the original altarpiece. The perspective is not strictly mathematical, as the artist prioritises the emotional and narrative weight of the scene over spatial accuracy. This work reflects the transition from late Gothic sensibilities toward the more individualistic and dramatic style that characterised Ratgeb's career. The figures appear grounded in their environment, yet their interactions suggest a tension that permeates the entire composition. The inclusion of the overturned stool in the foreground adds a sense of immediacy and disruption to the otherwise formal gathering.
