This landscape by Ferdinand Hodler captures the grandeur of the Swiss Alps with bold colours and simplified forms. 'The Lady of the Isenfluh' exemplifies Hodler's unique style of Parallelism.
Ferdinand Hodler, a Swiss painter born in 1853, is known for his symbolist and expressionist works that often depict themes of nature, mortality, and national identity. Hodler developed a style known as Parallelism, which involved arranging figures and elements in symmetrical patterns to convey harmony and unity. His work had a considerable influence on early 20th-century art. 'The Lady of the Isenfluh' presents a view of the Swiss Alps, rendered with bold colours and simplified forms. The composition is structured into distinct horizontal bands, with the snow-capped mountain at the top, followed by rolling green hills and a deep valley below. Hodler uses colour to define the different planes of the image, with blues and greens dominating the middle ground and lighter pinks and purples suggesting the rocky faces of the mountains. The brushwork is visible, adding a sense of texture and movement to the scene. The overall effect is one of grandeur and serenity, capturing the sublime beauty of the Swiss alpine region.
