A serene Impressionist view of the French village of Vetheuil, capturing the light on the Seine and the surrounding hills in 1880.
Claude Monet painted The Hills of Vetheuil in 1880, during his residence in the small village of Vetheuil on the banks of the Seine. This period marked a shift in his practice, as he moved away from the urban subjects of Paris to focus on the atmospheric conditions of the French countryside. The composition captures the village nestled against the rising slopes, with the distinctive church towers dominating the skyline.
Monet employs a palette of soft greens, ochres, and pale blues to render the light reflecting off the water and the grassy hillsides. His brushwork is characteristic of his mature Impressionist style, utilising short, broken strokes to suggest the texture of the foliage and the movement of the river. The water acts as a mirror, repeating the colours of the sky and the village architecture in a series of horizontal dabs.
Unlike his later, more abstract series, this work maintains a clear sense of spatial depth. The foreground is anchored by the dark, textured mass of a bush, which contrasts with the lighter, more ethereal treatment of the distant hills. The painting demonstrates his interest in the transient effects of daylight, a theme he pursued throughout his career. By focusing on the specific topography of Vetheuil, Monet documents the quiet rural life of the region while prioritising the optical experience of the scene over precise topographical detail. The work remains a clear example of his ability to unify disparate elements of a view through a consistent application of colour and light.
