A detailed etching by Albert de Balleroy depicting a hare in an open field, showcasing the artist's focus on animal anatomy and naturalistic observation.
Albert de Balleroy, a French painter and etcher, occupied a specific niche within the nineteenth-century art scene. Known primarily for his animalier subjects, he focused on the depiction of hunting scenes and wildlife. This etching, The Hare (Le Lièvre), demonstrates his technical proficiency with the needle and acid bath, capturing the texture of the animal's fur and the atmospheric quality of the open field.
The composition centres on a single hare, alert and positioned in the foreground. Its posture suggests a moment of stillness before flight. In the background, Balleroy includes smaller, secondary figures of hares in motion, providing a sense of scale and narrative context to the scene. The use of cross-hatching and varying line weights creates a tonal range that mimics the soft, muted light of a rural environment. The sparse vegetation and the open, rolling terrain reflect the artist's interest in the natural habitat of his subjects rather than an idealised or romanticised view of nature.
Balleroy was a contemporary of artists like Édouard Manet, with whom he shared a studio for a period. While his work remains distinct from the avant-garde movements that emerged during his lifetime, his dedication to the observation of animal anatomy and behaviour aligns him with the broader Realist movement. This print offers a glimpse into the technical traditions of French printmaking during the mid-nineteenth century, where the focus remained on precision, observation, and the translation of natural forms into the graphic medium. The work is a study in quiet observation, devoid of unnecessary embellishment, allowing the subject to occupy the viewer's attention through its grounded, realistic portrayal.
