A detailed etching by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, capturing a hunting scene set against a vast, panoramic valley and a fortified castle.
This etching, known as The Hare Hunt, is a fine example of the printmaking tradition established by Hieronymus Cock in Antwerp. Pieter Bruegel the Elder provided the original drawing, which was then transferred to the copper plate. The composition displays the artist's characteristic interest in the relationship between human activity and the natural world. In the foreground, two hunters move through a wooded area, their presence small against the expansive terrain. One figure aims a crossbow while the other follows, accompanied by a dog.
The middle ground and background reveal a sweeping panoramic view. A steep, rocky outcrop topped by a fortified castle dominates the right side of the frame, while a river winds through the valley towards a distant town. Bruegel employs a high vantage point, a technique he used to organise complex spatial relationships. The lines are precise and descriptive, capturing the textures of the gnarled tree trunks, the rough stone of the castle, and the varied foliage of the hillside.
This work belongs to a series of large-scale prints that brought Bruegel's vision to a wider audience beyond the collectors of his paintings. The inclusion of the publisher's mark, H. Cock excud, confirms its production within the professional print workshops of the period. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to translate the fluid quality of a pen drawing into the rigid medium of metal engraving. It remains a clear record of the sixteenth-century interest in topographical detail and the observation of daily life in the Low Countries.
