A detailed reproduction of folio 94r from the Gotha Missal, featuring Gothic script, historiated initials, and delicate marginalia by the Master of the Boqueteaux.
The Gotha Missal is a significant example of fourteenth-century French manuscript illumination. This specific folio, 94r, displays the characteristic precision of the Master of the Boqueteaux, an anonymous artist active in Paris during the reign of Charles V. The page layout follows the standard liturgical structure of the period, featuring dense columns of Latin text written in a formal Gothic script. The visual organisation of the page relies on the interplay between the written word and decorative elements. The margins contain delicate ivy-leaf tendrils, a hallmark of Parisian illumination from this era. These thin, calligraphic lines extend from the historiated initials, creating a sense of movement across the parchment. The use of gold leaf provides a reflective quality that contrasts with the iron gall ink and the red and blue pigments used for rubrics and smaller initials. At the lower right, a miniature depicts a group of figures, likely clergy or saints, rendered with the restrained naturalism typical of the artist. The figures occupy a shallow space, defined by the architectural frame of the initial. The palette is balanced, relying on primary colours to guide the reader through the liturgical text. The Master of the Boqueteaux is known for this specific approach to figure modelling and the application of fine, rhythmic penwork in the borders. This print captures the texture of the original vellum and the precise application of pigment, offering a view into the workshop practices of late medieval France. The work remains a primary source for understanding the aesthetic priorities of the Valois court, where the production of luxury manuscripts reached a high level of technical refinement.
