The Goddess Ganga - Kalighat School

This work originates from the Kalighat school of painting, a style that emerged in the nineteenth century in the vicinity of the Kalighat Kali Temple in Calcutta. These paintings were produced by itinerant artists known as patuas, who catered to the growing urban population and pilgrims visiting the city. The style is characterised by bold, sweeping brushstrokes, minimal backgrounds, and a focus on mythological or contemporary subjects.

The image depicts the Hindu goddess Ganga, the personification of the river Ganges. She is shown seated upon her traditional vehicle, the makara, a mythical creature often depicted with the features of a fish or crocodile. The goddess is rendered with four arms, holding a water vessel, which signifies her role as the source of life and purification. Her attire is simple yet regal, adorned with jewellery and a prominent halo that frames her head. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of deep reds, ochres, and muted greys to define the figure against the plain paper background.

Kalighat paintings were typically created on mill-made paper using water-based pigments. The artists often employed a technique where the figures were outlined in black ink before being filled with colour. This approach allowed for rapid production, as these works were sold as inexpensive souvenirs to visitors. Despite their mass-produced nature, the works possess a distinct aesthetic quality, marked by fluid lines and a stylised approach to anatomy. This particular piece captures the essence of the genre, blending traditional religious iconography with the practical, direct methods of the Kalighat artisans. It remains a representative example of the visual culture of colonial-era Bengal, reflecting the intersection of religious devotion and the commercial realities of a changing urban environment.
