A Renaissance altarpiece by Vittore Carpaccio, depicting Saint Vitalis on horseback with a celestial vision of the Virgin and Child above.
Vittore Carpaccio, a Venetian master of the early sixteenth century, painted this work for the church of San Vitale in Venice. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, a common device in Venetian altarpieces of the period. In the lower register, Saint Vitalis is depicted on horseback, dressed in armour and holding a halberd. He is surrounded by a group of saints, including Saint Valeria, Saint Gervasius, and Saint Protasius. The architectural setting features a series of arches that open onto a distant, atmospheric view, demonstrating the artist's interest in spatial depth and light.
The upper register presents a balcony scene where additional saints are gathered. Above them, the Virgin and Child appear within a cloud, supported by cherubs. This celestial vision provides a vertical axis to the painting, connecting the terrestrial figures below with the divine realm above. Carpaccio employs a narrative approach, focusing on the specific attributes and gestures of each saint to clarify their identities and roles within the devotional context.
The painting reflects the stylistic characteristics of the Venetian school, with particular attention to the textures of fabric, the gleam of metal armour, and the soft rendering of human features. The colour palette is balanced, using deep reds and earthy tones to ground the figures, while the sky and clouds introduce lighter, cooler hues. The work remains in its original location in the church of San Vitale, serving as a record of the artistic production commissioned for Venetian religious institutions during the Renaissance. This fine art print captures the clarity of Carpaccio's draughtsmanship and the structured harmony of his multi-level composition.
