Martin Schongauer, a master of the Northern Renaissance, produced this engraving during the late fifteenth century. The composition depicts the Holy Family during their journey to escape Herod. Mary sits upon a donkey, cradling the infant Jesus, while Joseph stands to the right, reaching up to gather fruit from a palm tree. Two angels are positioned within the branches, assisting in the harvest. The scene is set within a dense, wooded environment, characteristic of Schongauer's attention to naturalistic detail.

Schongauer utilised the burin with exceptional precision, creating a variety of textures through cross-hatching and fine line work.
