A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicting the Flagellation of Christ, showcasing the technical precision of Northern Mannerism.
This engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicts the biblical scene of the Flagellation of Christ. Dolendo, a Dutch engraver active in the late sixteenth century, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition is structured around a central column, to which Christ is bound, creating a clear vertical axis that organises the surrounding figures.
To the left, a figure in elaborate robes observes the scene, while the executioners occupy the centre, their bodies twisted in dynamic poses typical of Northern Mannerism. The background architecture, featuring arched openings and classical columns, provides a sense of depth and spatial context. The artist employs fine hatching and cross-hatching techniques to model the musculature of the figures and the textures of their garments.
Dolendo worked within the circle of printmakers associated with the publisher Jacques de Gheyn II, whose name appears on the plate. The print reflects the interest in dramatic narrative and anatomical study prevalent in Dutch art at the time. The scene is rendered with a focus on the physical tension of the figures, capturing the intensity of the moment through gesture and posture. The use of light and shadow, achieved through the density of the engraved lines, directs the viewer's attention to the central group. This work is a representative example of the print culture in the Netherlands during the late sixteenth century, where biblical subjects were frequently interpreted through the lens of contemporary stylistic conventions.
