Description
This oil on panel by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts 'The Flagellation of Christ' within an elaborate architectural setting. The work exemplifies Altdorfer's style, integrating landscape and architecture into religious narratives.
Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) was a German painter, engraver, and architect of the Renaissance. He is known for his integration of landscape into religious and historical subjects. Altdorfer is considered one of the main representatives of the Danube School, which favoured expressive colour and the depiction of nature. 'The Flagellation of Christ' depicts the biblical scene of Jesus being whipped before his crucifixion. The composition is set within an elaborate architectural space, featuring classical columns and distant buildings. The figures are rendered with careful attention to detail, and the artist uses colour to create a sense of drama. The scene is viewed from a low vantage point, which adds to the sense of grandeur. The architectural setting overwhelms the figures, a common feature in Altdorfer's work, where the natural and built environment often takes precedence over the human subject. The painting is characterised by its detailed rendering of architecture and figures, as well as its use of colour to create a sense of depth and drama.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
