Description
Agnolo Bronzino's "The Crossing of the Red Sea" captures the biblical narrative with Mannerist elegance. The fresco presents a dynamic scene of the Israelites' escape, rendered in sculptural forms and a refined colour palette.
Agnolo Bronzino, an Italian Mannerist painter from Florence, executed "The Crossing of the Red Sea" as a fresco. Bronzino, also known as Agnolo di Cosimo, was a court painter for the Medici family. His style is characterised by its elegance, attention to detail, and often, a certain coolness or detachment. He was a prominent portraitist, but also produced religious and mythological works. "The Crossing of the Red Sea" depicts the biblical episode from the Book of Exodus. The scene shows the Israelites, led by Moses, escaping from Egypt as God parts the Red Sea, allowing them to cross on dry land. The pursuing Egyptian army is then engulfed by the returning waters. Bronzino's fresco presents a crowded, dynamic composition, filled with figures in various poses and states of action. The figures are rendered with a sculptural quality, typical of Mannerist art, and the colour palette features a range of tones, from pale flesh tones to deeper blues and reds. The overall effect is one of controlled chaos, where the drama of the event is tempered by the artist's refined aesthetic.
