A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I, depicting the biblical creation of light with Mannerist stylistic elements.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the biblical moment of creation. The composition centres on the figure of the Creator, who is shown in a dynamic, floating posture amidst a burst of celestial radiance. The artist employs the characteristic stylistic traits of Northern Mannerism, visible in the elongated proportions of the figure and the dramatic, swirling drapery that suggests movement through the heavens.
To the left, the sun is personified with a human face, emitting rays that contrast with the darker, cloud-filled areas of the composition. The inclusion of the Hebrew Tetragrammaton at the top provides a theological anchor for the scene. Below the main image, a Latin inscription identifies the subject, linking the visual narrative to the Genesis account. The application of colour, likely added after the initial printing, enhances the contrast between the luminous central figure and the surrounding cosmic void.
Johann Sadeler I was a prominent member of a family of engravers based in Antwerp, later working in Munich and Prague. His work often involved the reproduction of designs by other artists, though he was a skilled printmaker in his own right. This particular engraving demonstrates the technical precision typical of the period, with fine hatching used to model the clouds and the figure's robes. The print is presented here as it appears within a bound volume, retaining the original paper margins and the handwritten annotations that often accompany such historical folios. The work offers a glimpse into the late sixteenth-century approach to religious iconography, where the focus remains on the power and authority of the divine figure through exaggerated form and light.
