A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I, depicting the biblical creation of Eve with characteristic Northern Mannerist style.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the biblical narrative of the creation of Eve from the rib of Adam. The composition follows the conventions of late sixteenth-century Northern Mannerism, characterised by a clear narrative structure and the inclusion of multiple temporal moments within a single frame. In the foreground, the Creator, depicted as an elderly figure in flowing robes, draws Eve from the side of a slumbering Adam. The scene is populated by various animals, including a dog and a duck, which add a sense of earthly presence to the divine event. In the background, a smaller, secondary scene shows the figures of Adam and Eve walking with the Creator, suggesting the continuity of the narrative sequence.
The print is notable for its precise line work and the application of colour, which was common for engravings intended for inclusion in devotional books or collections. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and graceful, artificial poses typical of the period. The inclusion of Latin text at the base, alongside French commentary, indicates the work was produced for an educated audience interested in theological study and visual storytelling. The setting, while idyllic, maintains a sense of order and balance, reflecting the period's interest in combining classical humanism with Christian iconography. This print offers a window into the printmaking traditions of the Low Countries, where the Sadeler family operated as prolific publishers and engravers. The work demonstrates the technical skill required to balance complex figural arrangements with detailed naturalistic elements, all contained within a structured, page-like format.
