A seminal Futurist work by Umberto Boccioni, capturing the kinetic energy of industrial expansion in early twentieth-century Milan.
The City Rises, painted in 1910, is a foundational work of the Italian Futurist movement. It depicts the construction of a new power station on the outskirts of Milan, a subject that Boccioni used to explore the themes of industrialisation, urban expansion, and the energy of modern life. The composition is dominated by large, muscular horses that appear to pull the city into existence, their forms merging with the figures of labourers in a chaotic, swirling mass of motion.
Boccioni employs a technique of divided brushstrokes, reminiscent of Divisionism, to create a sense of flickering light and kinetic force. The palette is dominated by warm reds, oranges, and ochres, which contrast with the cooler blues and whites of the horses and the distant scaffolding. This colour choice conveys the heat and intensity of manual labour and the rapid pace of urban development. The perspective is flattened, pushing the action towards the viewer and creating an immersive experience of the scene.
Unlike earlier depictions of urban life that focused on static architecture, this work captures the process of change itself. The blurred figures and overlapping forms suggest the speed of the early twentieth century. Boccioni was interested in the synthesis of memory and sensation, and here he attempts to represent the total experience of the city rather than a single, frozen moment. The painting reflects the Futurist fascination with technology and the rejection of traditional, academic painting styles. It remains a primary example of how early modernists sought to translate the noise and movement of the industrial age onto the canvas.
