A Dutch Golden Age genre painting by Gabriel Metsu, depicting a woman playing a cittern in a dimly lit domestic interior.
Gabriel Metsu, a painter active during the Dutch Golden Age, produced this work around 1660. The composition depicts a domestic interior, a common subject for the artist, where a young woman sits playing a cittern. She wears a blue jacket trimmed with fur, contrasting with her plain skirt. Behind her, a man stands holding a glass, observing the performance. A small dog sits near the woman, adding a sense of quiet activity to the scene.
To the right, a table is covered with a patterned cloth, upon which rests a violin and a drinking horn. The lighting is characteristic of the period, using chiaroscuro to draw attention to the figures while leaving the background in shadow. Metsu demonstrates his technical ability through the rendering of different textures: the soft fur of the jacket, the polished wood of the instruments, and the heavy fabric of the table covering. The painting belongs to a tradition of Dutch genre art that often included subtle moral or social cues, though the primary focus remains on the interaction between the two figures and the musical theme.
Metsu was influenced by the Leiden school and later by the works of Vermeer and Dou. His ability to capture domestic life with precision made him a respected figure in his time. This print captures the tonal balance and the specific details of the original oil painting, preserving the atmosphere of the seventeenth-century Dutch interior. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to guide the viewer through the narrative elements of the room.
