Valadon uses a palette dominated by earth tones, ochres, and muted reds, punctuated by the white costumes of the performers. Her brushwork is deliberate and energetic, capturing the fleeting nature of the performance without resorting to excessive detail. Unlike many of her contemporaries who romanticised the circus, Valadon presents the scene with a sense of detachment.
