A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicting the legendary immortal Chinnan summoning a dragon from a bowl.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts the legendary Chinese sennin, or immortal, Ch'en Nan (known as Chinnan in Japan). Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, operating his own publishing house in Edo. His work often explored themes from Chinese folklore and Taoist mythology, which were popular subjects for the urban audience of the period.
The composition shows Chinnan in a dynamic pose, seated upon a rocky outcrop. He holds a bowl aloft, from which a dragon emerges, rising into the air amidst a series of diagonal lines representing rain or atmospheric energy. The figure is rendered with bold, calligraphic outlines, a hallmark of Shigenaga's style before the full adoption of polychrome printing. The colour palette is restrained, relying on hand-applied pigments to provide accents of red and ochre against the paper tone.
Shigenaga was known for his experimentation with perspective and his influence on later masters, including Suzuki Harunobu. This print reflects the transition from the early, monochrome ink prints to the more complex multi-coloured works that would define the later Ukiyo-e period. The cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the subject, while the artist's signature and seal are visible on the left. The work captures the blend of human form and supernatural elements common in the depictions of sennin, who were believed to possess the ability to command natural forces through their spiritual practice. The print serves as an example of the technical and thematic interests of the Edo period printmakers, who balanced traditional subject matter with a developing graphic language.
