A luminous Post-Impressionist study of the stone bridge at Bastide-du-Vert, captured through Henri Martin's signature divisionist brushwork.
Henri Martin, a French painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, spent much of his later career in the Lot region of France. This work depicts the stone bridge at Bastide-du-Vert, a location that appeared frequently in his output. Martin utilised a distinct divisionist technique, applying small, rhythmic brushstrokes of pure colour to the canvas. These marks do not blend fully on the surface, but rather interact optically when viewed from a distance, creating a sense of shimmering light and atmosphere.
The composition focuses on the architectural form of the bridge, which spans the calm water of the river. The stone structure is rendered in warm, golden tones, reflecting the sunlight of the French countryside. Below, the water acts as a mirror, capturing the inverted arches of the bridge and the surrounding foliage. Tall, slender trees frame the scene, their verticality contrasting with the horizontal lines of the bridge and the riverbank. The sky is filled with light, airy clouds, painted with the same systematic application of colour that defines the rest of the scene.
Martin's approach to this subject demonstrates his interest in the effects of natural light on rural architecture. By breaking down the image into individual strokes, he captures the transient quality of the afternoon sun. The palette is dominated by warm yellows, ochres, and soft blues, which evoke the specific climate of the Midi-Pyrénées. This piece provides a clear example of his mature style, where the focus remains on the interplay between solid form and the ephemeral nature of light and reflection. The work remains a representative example of his dedication to capturing the quiet beauty of the French provinces through a scientific, yet poetic, application of paint.
