Description
A collaborative Renaissance masterpiece from the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, featuring early work by Leonardo da Vinci.
The Baptism of Christ is a collaborative work produced in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. The painting depicts the biblical scene of John the Baptist baptising Jesus in the River Jordan. Above, a dove representing the Holy Spirit descends within a burst of light. Two angels kneel on the left bank, observing the event. Art historians identify distinct hands within the composition. Verrocchio is responsible for the primary structure and the figure of John the Baptist. The young Leonardo da Vinci, then an apprentice in the workshop, contributed the angel on the far left and significant portions of the landscape background. Leonardo's contribution is noted for its softer modelling and the use of oil paint, which allowed for more subtle transitions of light and shadow compared to the tempera used elsewhere. The angel painted by Leonardo displays a grace and psychological depth that depart from the more rigid, linear style of his master. The landscape features a winding river and distant mountains, rendered with an atmospheric perspective that suggests depth. The palm tree on the left provides a vertical balance to the figure of John the Baptist on the right. The work remains a primary example of the collaborative nature of Renaissance studio practice, where apprentices often completed sections of a master's commission. It offers a clear view into the transition from the traditional Florentine style to the more naturalistic techniques that would define the High Renaissance.
