Albrecht Altdorfer's "The Ascension of Christ", painted circa 1516-1518, presents a dramatic interpretation of the biblical event. Altdorfer, a significant figure in the German Renaissance, particularly within the Danube School, infuses the scene with his characteristic style. The painting is rendered in oil on wood. The upper portion of the composition shows Christ ascending within a radiant, cloud-like halo. He is depicted in a pale robe, with a reddish cloak draped over his shoulders. Below, the scene transitions to a darker, earthbound setting. Figures are scattered on the ground, seemingly in awe or bewilderment. The lower portion is dominated by deep browns and blacks, creating a stark contrast with the luminous upper section. A fire burns in the background, casting an orange glow on the surrounding figures and architecture. The overall effect is one of dramatic contrast, juxtaposing the divine and the earthly realms. Altdorfer's work is notable for its expressive use of colour and light, as well as its integration of natural elements into religious narratives. The painting is currently held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
