Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) was a German painter, engraver, and architect of the Renaissance. He is considered one of the main artists of the Danube school, which favored expressive colour and the depiction of nature. Altdorfer is also known for his pioneering work in pure, or 'unpopulated', ,landscape art. His patrons included Maximilian I and Emperor Charles V. He spent most of his career in Regensburg, where he served as city architect. 'The Arrest of Christ' depicts the moment when Jesus is seized by soldiers in the Garden of Gethsemane. The scene is rendered in a dense, almost claustrophobic composition, typical of Altdorfer's style. A flurry of spears and torches surrounds Christ, who is being restrained by the soldiers. The woodcut technique, with its stark contrasts and fine lines, adds to the drama and intensity of the scene. A burst of light emanates from above, possibly symbolising divine intervention or the presence of God. The artist's monogram appears in the upper right corner.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
