A dreamlike, surrealist composition by Sabin Balasa, featuring an ethereal figure suspended within a luminous, aquatic environment.
Sabin Balasa is a figure of note in twentieth-century Romanian art, recognised for a distinct visual language that blends mythological themes with a dreamlike, atmospheric quality. In The Archipelago of Love, Balasa presents a scene that defies conventional spatial logic. The composition is dominated by a deep, luminous blue palette, which creates a sense of immersion within an otherworldly aquatic environment.
The central figure, rendered with a smooth, almost ethereal quality, appears suspended in a state of weightlessness. This figure is positioned against a backdrop of geological formations that resemble islands or submerged rocks, their surfaces textured with mossy greens and stark, pale stone. The lighting is deliberate, casting long shadows that suggest a source from above the water line, while the water itself possesses a translucent, glass-like clarity.
Balasa often utilised this specific approach to figure painting, where the human form is elongated and idealized, appearing as if it belongs to a realm of memory or myth rather than physical reality. The interaction between the organic, fluid shapes of the water and the solid, static nature of the rocks creates a tension that is characteristic of his wider body of work. His technique involves a meticulous application of paint to achieve a polished, seamless surface, removing the evidence of the brushstroke to enhance the illusion of a dream state. This piece invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the human form and the natural world, framed through a lens of romanticism and surrealist inquiry. The work remains a primary example of his ability to construct self-contained universes that operate under their own internal rules of physics and light.
