A miniature from the Belles Heures, depicting the apostles within an elaborate architectural frame, executed in the International Gothic style.
This miniature originates from the Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry, a manuscript produced by the Limbourg brothers between 1405 and 1416. The scene depicts the apostles departing to spread their message, set within a sophisticated architectural frame that mimics the sculptural portals of contemporary cathedrals. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the foreground, where figures engage in solemn interaction, and the background, which presents a rolling, hilly terrain dotted with trees and a distant castle.
The Limbourg brothers demonstrate a mastery of the International Gothic style through their use of clear, saturated colours and precise, fine-lined detail. The figures are draped in heavy, voluminous robes, with the folds rendered to suggest weight and movement. The architectural border is particularly notable for its three-dimensional quality, featuring sculpted figures in niches that provide a sense of depth and structural integrity to the page. The lower register contains a series of diamond-shaped panels, each housing a small portrait, which adds a rhythmic, decorative element to the overall design.
This work reflects the high level of craftsmanship associated with the court of the Duc de Berry. The attention to detail, from the individual expressions of the apostles to the textures of the landscape, demonstrates the technical skill required for such small-scale painting. The use of gold leaf and lapis lazuli pigment contributes to the luminosity of the scene, a characteristic feature of high-status manuscripts from this period. The work remains a primary example of early fifteenth-century European book art, capturing the transition toward more naturalistic representation while maintaining the decorative traditions of the medieval period.
