This work by Albert Bouts depicts the biblical scene of the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary. Bouts, a painter active in Leuven, followed the stylistic traditions established by his father, Dieric Bouts. The composition is set within a domestic interior, a common convention in Northern European painting of the period, which brings the sacred event into a familiar, human space.

The Archangel Gabriel is shown kneeling, wearing an elaborate ecclesiastical cope over a white alb. His wings are rendered with attention to individual feathers, and he holds a sceptre. Opposite him, the Virgin Mary stands by a lectern, her posture one of quiet reception. She wears a heavy, deep-blue mantle that falls in structured folds, a hallmark of the period's approach to drapery. The interior features a tiled floor with a geometric pattern, a wooden window shutter, and a small vase of lilies, which serves as a traditional symbol of purity.

Bouts employs a precise, controlled technique. The light enters from the left, illuminating the figures and casting soft shadows that define the volume of their garments. The architectural elements, including the arched doorway and the vaulted ceiling, provide a sense of spatial depth. The colour palette is dominated by the cool tones of the angel's wings and Mary's robe, balanced by the warm reds of the cushion and the altar cloth. This painting reflects the technical proficiency of the Early Netherlandish school, focusing on clarity, symbolic detail, and the careful observation of light and texture. It remains a representative example of the devotional art produced in the Low Countries at the turn of the sixteenth century.
