Description

A dramatic woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts the biblical scene of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. The artwork is characterised by its fine lines and dramatic contrasts.

Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) was a German painter, engraver, and architect of the Renaissance. He is considered one of the main artists of the Danube school. Altdorfer is known for his integration of natural elements into religious and historical subjects. He is also known as one of the first pure painters of nature. 'The Agony in the Garden' depicts the biblical scene of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane before his arrest. The woodcut shows Christ kneeling, receiving a chalice from an angel. Below him, the apostles Peter, James, and John are sleeping. In the background, soldiers approach to arrest Jesus. The composition is rendered in a dense network of fine lines, creating a dramatic contrast between light and shadow. The landscape is stylised, with towering rock formations and a night sky illuminated by the moon. Altdorfer's skill in woodcut is evident in the level of detail and the expressive use of line to convey emotion and atmosphere.

Artist Biography

Albrecht Altdorfer

Altdorfer was elected mayor of Regensburg in 1528 but turned the position down to finish a painting. The painting was The Battle of Alexander at Issus, commissioned by Duke William IV of Bavaria: a vast panoramic canvas showing Alexander's victory over Darius III, with thousands of tiny soldiers beneath a cosmic sky. It is one of the first history paintings to treat landscape as the dominant element.

He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
