Description
This fresco by Pietro da Cortona depicts a scene of violence and chaos, reflecting the tumultuous nature of the Age of Iron. The composition is complex, with multiple focal points drawing the viewer's eye across the scene.
Pietro da Cortona, born Pietro Berrettini (1596-1669), was a leading figure in the Roman Baroque style. He was an accomplished painter and architect. Cortona's work is characterised by its dynamic compositions, theatricality, and use of colour. He is particularly known for his grand-scale frescoes, which adorn many Roman palaces and churches. His artistic output helped define the aesthetics of the High Baroque. 'The Age of Iron' depicts a scene of violence and chaos, reflecting the tumultuous nature of the depicted era. The fresco is filled with figures engaged in combat, their bodies contorted in dramatic poses. The composition is complex, with multiple focal points drawing the viewer's eye across the scene. The colour palette is rich, with deep reds, blues, and golds adding to the overall sense of drama. The figures are rendered with a high degree of naturalism, their expressions conveying a range of emotions from rage to despair. The background features architectural elements and a stormy sky, further enhancing the sense of turmoil.

Artist Biography
Pietro da Cortona
He was born Pietro Berrettini in Cortona, Tuscany, around 1596 and trained in Rome under Andrea Commodi and Baccio Ciarpi. He served as head of the Accademia di San Luca from 1634 to 1638. His architectural works include the facades of Santa Maria della Pace and Santa Maria in Via Lata, making him one of the rare artists of the period to excel equally as painter, architect and interior decorator.
His frescoes in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence (1637 to 1647) were his other major decorative cycle. He died in Rome in 1669, at seventy-two.
His influence on Baroque ceiling painting was immediate and lasting: every illusionistic fresco produced in Rome for the next century took the Barberini ceiling as its starting point, whether following Cortona's method or reacting against it. Few single paintings have shaped an entire tradition so decisively.
