Description
A study of the human form, The Age of Bronze captures a male figure in a moment of awakening, noted for its anatomical precision and naturalistic modelling.
The Age of Bronze, created in 1876, represents a moment of transition in the career of Auguste Rodin. The sculpture depicts a male figure in a state of awakening, with one arm raised above his head and the other bent at the elbow. The pose suggests a figure emerging from sleep or perhaps a primitive state of consciousness. Rodin modelled the work after a young Belgian soldier named Auguste Neyt, whose physique provided the basis for the anatomical accuracy of the piece. Upon its initial exhibition in Brussels and later in Paris, the sculpture faced accusations of being a direct cast from a living model. This controversy arose due to the high degree of naturalism present in the musculature and the surface texture of the bronze. Rodin defended his process by providing photographs of the model and demonstrating his methods of clay modelling. The work eventually gained recognition for its technical precision and its departure from the rigid, academic standards of the period. The figure stands in a contrapposto stance, which provides a sense of internal movement and tension. The surface of the bronze captures light in a way that emphasises the contours of the torso and limbs. Unlike the heroic or mythological subjects common in nineteenth-century sculpture, this work focuses on the human form as a subject in its own right. The absence of specific narrative attributes allows the viewer to focus on the physical presence of the figure. This piece remains a primary example of Rodin's ability to imbue bronze with a sense of vitality and psychological depth, moving away from the smooth, polished finishes favoured by his contemporaries.
