This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunzan depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Nakamura Nakazo I. The artist, a member of the Katsukawa school, focused his output on the theatrical world of Edo-period Japan. Yakusha-e, or actor prints, functioned as promotional material and souvenirs for theatre-goers, capturing the specific mannerisms and costumes of performers in their most famous roles.
In this composition, the actor is portrayed with the exaggerated facial features characteristic of the Katsukawa style, which sought to capture the individual likeness of the performer rather than an idealised mask. The figure is draped in a heavy, deep-red garment adorned with a prominent white crest. The stark contrast between the bold red fabric and the neutral background draws the eye to the actor's intense expression and posture. The inclusion of a sword hilt protruding from the side suggests the dramatic tension inherent in the character being portrayed.
Katsukawa Shunzan was active during the late 18th century, a period when the production of ukiyo-e prints reached a high level of technical sophistication. The print demonstrates the precise line work and flat colour application typical of the medium. The composition is balanced, using the large expanse of the actor's robe to anchor the figure within the frame.
