A monochrome woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I, capturing the kabuki actor Nakamura Denkuro I in a dynamic, early eighteenth-century theatrical pose.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Denkuro I in a characteristic pose. As a founder of the Torii school, Kiyonobu I developed a specific aesthetic for theatrical prints, known as yakusha-e. These works were produced to promote the kabuki theatre in Edo, capturing the energy of performers on stage. The composition relies on bold, sweeping lines that define the actor's posture and the heavy folds of his costume. The artist employs a technique where the ink weight varies to create a sense of movement and volume, despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium.
The actor is shown in a dynamic stance, often associated with the aragoto style of acting, which was popularised in the early eighteenth century. This style emphasised exaggerated gestures and powerful characterisations. The print is executed in sumizuri-e, a monochrome style using only black ink on paper. This lack of colour focuses the viewer on the graphic quality of the line work and the stylised features of the actor. The inclusion of a pine tree motif in the background provides a traditional setting, often used in theatrical backdrops to signify a connection to nature or specific dramatic scenes.
Kiyonobu I was instrumental in establishing the visual language of the Torii school, which maintained a monopoly on kabuki signage and promotional prints for generations. His approach to figure drawing is marked by a certain robustness, reflecting the physical intensity of the performances he documented. This print offers a glimpse into the early period of ukiyo-e, before the introduction of full-colour printing techniques. It remains a clear example of the graphic power inherent in early Japanese woodblock production, where the economy of line conveys both the identity of the performer and the spirit of the kabuki stage.
