A traditional Chinese ink wash painting by Zhai Dakun, depicting a bamboo grove shrouded in mist and rain with delicate calligraphic brushwork.
Zhai Dakun, an artist active during the Qing Dynasty, demonstrates the traditional literati approach to ink wash painting in this work. The composition focuses on the atmospheric qualities of a bamboo grove obscured by weather. By employing varying densities of ink, the artist creates a sense of depth where the foreground foliage emerges from a soft, misty background. The structure of the bamboo is rendered with calligraphic brushwork, reflecting the technical discipline required to capture the movement of leaves in the wind.
The inclusion of a small structure nestled within the grove provides a human element to the scene, suggesting a place of retreat or contemplation. This is a common motif in Chinese ink painting, where the natural world serves as a space for intellectual and spiritual reflection. The muted colour palette, dominated by sepia tones and charcoal ink, emphasises the quiet, damp conditions described in the title. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden hue, which interacts with the ink to produce a soft, diffused light across the surface of the work.
Zhai Dakun uses the negative space of the silk to represent the mist, allowing the viewer to fill in the gaps of the scene through suggestion rather than explicit detail. The calligraphy in the upper right corner provides context and poetic framing, a standard practice in classical Chinese art that integrates text and image into a single aesthetic unit. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original, preserving the delicate balance between the dark, defined bamboo stalks and the ethereal, washed-out atmosphere of the rain-soaked environment.
