A dynamic abstract composition by Romanian artist Romul Nutiu, featuring bold blue fields, rhythmic black lines, and contrasting orange accents.
Romul Nutiu, a significant figure in Romanian post-war art, developed a distinct approach to abstraction that prioritised the physical act of painting. In 'Telamon in Motion', the artist engages with the concept of the telamon, a structural support figure in classical architecture, by translating its implied strength and verticality into a series of fluid, non-representational forms. The composition avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a layered arrangement of colour fields and gestural marks.
The work is defined by a bold palette, where saturated blues dominate the upper register, contrasted against earthy tones and sharp accents of orange and green. Nutiu employs a rhythmic application of paint, where black, calligraphic lines weave through the colour blocks, suggesting movement and structural tension. These lines do not merely outline shapes, they act as independent forces that guide the viewer across the surface of the canvas. The interplay between the solid, opaque blocks of colour and the more spontaneous, linear elements creates a sense of kinetic energy.
Nutiu often experimented with the boundaries of the canvas, and this piece reflects his interest in the relationship between the painted image and the physical space it occupies. By stripping away figurative references, he allows the viewer to focus on the material qualities of the oil paint and the balance of the composition. The work functions as a study in equilibrium, where the weight of the blue masses is countered by the lighter, more fragmented sections below. This approach to abstraction, which Nutiu refined throughout his career, remains a clear example of his ability to imbue non-objective forms with a sense of purpose and structural integrity.
