A precise eighteenth-century Dutch etching by Pieter van den Berge, designed as a formal title page for a historical publication.
This etching and engraving by Pieter van den Berge functions as a title page for the historical work 'Oud-Heeden van Zaan-land, Stavoren, Vronen en Waterland' by H. Soeteboom. The composition follows the conventions of early eighteenth-century Dutch book design, utilising a formal architectural framework to present the publication details.
At the centre, a rectangular tablet displays the title text, flanked by two classical urns resting upon ornate pedestals. These pedestals feature relief carvings of figures, adding a sense of classical gravity to the design. Above the central text, a draped curtain provides a theatrical element, framing a small circular emblem that depicts a local scene. At the base, a small box or chest sits upon a curved platform, further grounding the composition.
Van den Berge, a Dutch engraver active in Amsterdam, was known for his technical precision in producing plates for maps, portraits, and book illustrations. His work here demonstrates the clean, controlled line quality typical of the period, where the focus remains on clarity and the balanced arrangement of decorative elements. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates subtle variations in tone, defining the forms of the urns and the folds of the drapery without overwhelming the central text.
This print provides a clear example of the intersection between historical documentation and decorative graphic arts in the Netherlands during the early 1700s. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its status as a representative example of Dutch printmaking from this era. The composition is structured to guide the viewer's eye towards the information provided, maintaining a sense of order and symmetry that was highly valued in the production of scholarly texts of the time.
