Description

A serene coastal scene by Théo van Rysselberghe, capturing the soft light of a Mediterranean sunset through expressive, rhythmic brushwork.

Théo van Rysselberghe, a central figure in the Belgian Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work in 1915. The painting captures the Mediterranean coast, a subject that occupied the artist frequently during his later years in the south of France. By this period, van Rysselberghe had moved away from the strict, scientific pointillism of his earlier career, adopting a more fluid and expressive brushwork while maintaining his interest in the optical effects of light.

The composition is anchored by the silhouette of a pine tree, which frames the view across the water towards the distant hills. The colour palette is dominated by soft pinks, mauves, and pale yellows, reflecting the specific atmospheric conditions of a coastal sunset. The water is rendered with short, rhythmic strokes that suggest the gentle movement of the sea, while the rocky foreground is treated with broader, more solid applications of paint. This contrast between the delicate, light-filled sky and the darker, more grounded elements of the shore creates a sense of balance.

Van Rysselberghe was a founding member of Les XX, an influential group of artists in Brussels. His transition from the rigorous application of dots to these looser, more painterly marks demonstrates his ongoing exploration of colour theory and light. The work avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the overall mood and the interplay of warm and cool tones across the surface of the canvas. It is a clear example of his mature style, where the observation of nature is filtered through a refined understanding of colour harmony and composition. The signature and date, visible in the lower right corner, confirm its place within his later body of work, produced during his residence in the Var region.
