A 1914 illustration by John Bauer featuring a small cottage at the base of a dark mountain, rendered in ink and watercolour.
John Bauer, a Swedish illustrator known for his contributions to the annual publication Bland tomtar och troll, created this work in 1914. The image depicts a small, snow-covered cottage positioned against the base of a massive, dark mountain. A thin, vertical trail of smoke rises from the chimney, drawing the eye upward toward the crest of the slope. In the foreground, a small, hunched creature with a tail and a pointed cap walks across the snow, adding a sense of narrative mystery to the scene.
Bauer utilised a restrained palette, relying on deep blacks for the mountain and warm, muted tones for the snow and the cottage. The composition is stark and minimalist, emphasising the scale of the natural environment in relation to the human-built structure. The contrast between the dark, imposing mountain and the small, glowing window of the cottage creates a quiet, atmospheric tension. This work reflects the artist's ability to blend Scandinavian folklore with a modern, graphic sensibility.
Technically, the piece demonstrates Bauer's precise control over ink and watercolour. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the shapes of the roof and the creature without unnecessary detail. The flat application of colour across the mountain surface creates a silhouette effect, which allows the subtle textures of the snow and the smoke to emerge. This illustration is characteristic of Bauer's later work, where he moved away from complex ornamentation toward a more direct, symbolic visual language. It remains a clear example of his contribution to the Swedish national romantic style, capturing the solitude often found in Nordic winter settings.
