A Parisian street on a rainy day is captured in this cityscape attributed to Maximilien Luce. The muted palette and loose brushwork evoke the atmosphere of the scene.
This cityscape, attributed to Maximilien Luce (1858-1941), captures a Parisian street on what appears to be a rainy day. Luce, a French Neo-Impressionist, was known for his paintings of urban scenes, often depicting the effects of light and atmosphere. His work frequently explored themes of labour, industry, and the everyday life of the working class. He was associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, and his style is characterised by its use of small, distinct brushstrokes to create a shimmering effect. The painting presents a view down a long avenue flanked by trees and buildings. Figures with umbrellas populate the street, their reflections visible on the wet pavement. The colour palette is muted, dominated by greens, greys, and browns, which contributes to the overall mood of the scene. The composition draws the eye into the distance, with the buildings and trees receding into the background. The brushwork is loose and expressive, typical of the Impressionist style, capturing the fleeting moment and the atmospheric conditions of the day.
