A detailed 16th-century engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert illustrating the biblical parable of the unmerciful servant.
This engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicts the biblical parable of the unmerciful servant, as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew. The scene captures the moment the servant is handed over to the torturers after failing to show mercy to his fellow servant, despite having his own debt forgiven by his master. Coornhert, a significant figure in the Dutch Renaissance, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of precise, rhythmic hatching to define form and shadow.
The composition is structured to guide the viewer through the narrative. In the background, the master stands with his attendants, gesturing towards the foreground where the central action occurs. The servant is shown bound, being led into a dark, arched prison entrance by two figures. The architectural elements, including the stone masonry and the distant classical structures, reflect the influence of Italian Mannerism on Northern European printmaking during the mid-sixteenth century. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical detail and dramatic posture, typical of the period's interest in human expression and moral storytelling.
As a printmaker and publisher, Coornhert played a role in the dissemination of visual narratives across Europe. This work, published by Philips Galle, exemplifies the collaborative nature of the print trade in the Netherlands. The clarity of the line work allows for a clear reading of the moral lesson, which was a common objective for religious imagery of the era. The print serves as a record of the period's stylistic transition, blending Northern attention to detail with the structural sensibilities of the Southern Renaissance. The monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the tension of the scene, emphasising the gravity of the servant's predicament through stark contrasts and controlled linework.
