A nineteenth-century albumen print by Giorgio Sommer, documenting the excavated Strada di Sallustio in Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius in the distance.
This albumen print by Giorgio Sommer captures the Strada di Sallustio in the archaeological site of Pompeii. Sommer, a German photographer based in Naples, operated one of the most prolific studios in Italy during the late nineteenth century. His work documented the ongoing excavations of the Roman city, providing a visual record for scholars and tourists alike.
The composition focuses on the basalt-paved street, which recedes into the distance, flanked by the excavated walls of ancient dwellings. The perspective draws the eye toward the horizon, where the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius looms. The image displays the characteristic clarity of nineteenth-century architectural photography, capturing the texture of the weathered stone and the stark contrast between the ruins and the sky.
Sommer often numbered his negatives for commercial distribution, and this print bears the mark 'No. 5321'. Such photographs were frequently collected by travellers on the Grand Tour, serving as souvenirs of their visits to the Italian peninsula. The print remains a document of the state of the site during the Victorian era, offering a view of the ruins before modern restoration efforts altered their appearance. The framing within the print itself, complete with decorative borders, reflects the presentation style common to nineteenth-century photographic albums.
